Possible 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg will visit the crucial swing state of Florida this week as he tours the country talking about climate change.
Bloomberg, a billionaire philanthropist and former New York City mayor, will meet with St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman on Thursday and will stand beside Kriseman as he announces new environmental policies for his city, according to local news website Florida Politics. The pair will also speak to Moms Demand Action, the gun control advocacy group.
Bloomberg has recently made a slew of appearances talking about climate change, including at the Iowa release of his Bloomberg Philanthropies-funded documentary “Paris to Pittsburgh” last month and in an hour-long special on the issue aired by NBC News’ “Meet the Press” last weekend.
“I think that any candidate for federal office better darn well have a plan to deal with the problem that the Trump science advisers say could basically end this world,” Bloomberg told NBC News on Sunday, referring to the Trump administration’s National Climate Assessment, which was published in November.
Moms Demand Action is an off-shoot of Everytown for Gun Safety, an organization founded in the aftermath of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, that pushes for gun reform. Bloomberg provides financial support to the group.
Bloomberg, a former Republican and independent, is expected to contest the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in 2020. He reiterated to NBC News this weekend that he intends to make a decision about whether he will mount a campaign by the end of next month.
