Protecting Trump and his family on their travels cost $30 million so far, report says

Protecting President Trump and his family on their travel excursions since he took office has cost taxpayers approximately $30 million, according to estimates from the Los Angeles Times.

According to the newspaper, the most expensive cost is protecting Trump Tower. Trump’s midtown Manhattan home requires about $212,000 per day in order to protect first lady Melania Trump and the couple’s son Barron with the Secret Service, New York Police Department and New York Fire Department.

The Times estimates trips to Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Fla., have cost taxpayers about $8 million. Trump has spent seven weekends at his Florida home since taking office.

Providing the first lady with flights to meet Trump at Mar-a-Lago, or Washington, D.C., have cost an additional $1.13 million since Melania Trump still lives in New York City and must fly separately from her husband to meet up with him.

Donald Trump, Jr. and Eric Trump, the two Trump sons in charge of the Trump Organization now that their father is president, have made business trips to Dubai, Scotland, Ireland, the Dominican Republican since their father took office. Protecting the two elder Trump sons on those trips has cost approximately $1 million.

The Trump children, their three spouses and Trump’s eight grandchildren all made a March trip to Aspen, Colo., for a ski vacation that required at least 100 Secret Service agents to provide protection. The Times estimated that would cost at least $165,000 to pull off, based on a trip taken by then-first lady Michelle Obama and her two daughters in February.

During his eight years in office, President Barack Obama required about $97 million in order to protect him and his family on their travels.
