White House counselor Kellyanne Conway said President Trump will continue to defend his personal attorney Michael Cohen despite criticism that he may be interfering in a federal investigation.
Conway said on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday morning criticisms of Trump for tweeting messages of support to Cohen are off base because Trump should be allowed to defend his friends.
She said Trump feels Cohen is being treated unfairly by investigators and the media and won’t hesitate to speak out.
“He is defending someone who [he] has worked with and known for a dozen plus years, who he thinks is being treated unfairly,” she said.
Conway added, “He stands up for people in his inner circle and people he knows when he thinks they are being treated unfairly. He shows a great sense of loyalty to people.”
Trump tweeted messages of support to Cohen amid speculation Trump’s legal enforcer may “flip” and cooperate with federal investigators.
Conway refused to speculate what Cohen could possibly say about Trump and said Trump’s concerns are solely about Cohen, not himself.
“The president is talking about Michael Cohen here. The southern district of New York has jurisdiction over this case and the president has made clear that he thinks this is an overwrought process,” she said.
