After a 2-0 win over Canada on Tuesday improved its all-time record in Gold Cup group-play matches to 24-0-2, the U.S. national team moves on to Tampa, Fla., where it will face Panama at 8 p.m. on Saturday.
The Canada match helped rehabilitate the reputation of 21-year-old U.S. forward Jozy Altidore, who scored his 11th international goal and had an assist after struggling to find a consistent scoring touch in Europe the last three years. The game also helped the United States get over the cash-generating but embarrassing 4-0 loss to Spain last weekend.
Panama, which is 0-6-3 against the Americans, is tied with the United States at the top of Group C after holding on for a 3-2 win over Guadeloupe.
Group C’s first- and second-place finishers will advance to quarterfinal matches at RFK Stadium on June 19.
