Hillary Clinton increased her lead over Donald Trump to 8 points following Sunday night’s presidential debate, according to a Reuters/IPSOS poll released Tuesday evening.
Nearly one in five likely U.S. voters would not in choose either candidate, while 45 percent picked the Democratic nominee and 37 percent backed the GOP candidate. Clinton had had a 5-point advantage over Trump in a similar poll conducted last week.
Clinton performed slightly better among likely voters who watched the debate, seizing a 10-point lead over Trump.
The results indicate Trump’s apology and defense of sexual comments he made in 2005 did not settle well with voters. One in five conservatives said their nominee’s comments have automatically disqualified him from continuing in the race.
Slightly more than half of debate viewers deemed Clinton the winner and only one-third said Trump had prevailed. Across party lines, 82 percent of Democrats said Clinton won, while 68 percent of Republicans believed Trump had come out on top.
