House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday that she doesn’t know anything about the controversy involving Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and declined to answer questions about whether the DNC chair might be on the way out.
“I’m not aware of it,” Pelosi said when asked about the behind-the-scenes efforts to force out Wasserman Schultz. “I can’t answer a question I’m not aware of.”
Lawmakers have complained that new DNC leadership is needed to unite a party that has been fractured by the primary fight between Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who has claimed the primary system is rigged in Clinton’s favor.
Pelosi repeated a statement she released on Tuesday announcing the she has “the respect of her colleagues” in her effort to unite the party and win in November. Pelosi said she is otherwise focused on passing key legislation and blocking Republican bills she opposes.
“I don’t spend a whole lot of time on Democratic Party politics,” Pelosi said, after repeated questions from reporters about the status of Wasserman Schultz. “I have not even gotten myself involved in the presidential [race], so I’m not a good person to ask about this.”
