Boise area rattled by 6.5 magnitude earthquake

A 6.5 magnitude earthquake shook a valley near Boise, Idaho, on Tuesday evening.

The earthquake took place at 5:55 p.m. local time and lasted for 20 to 30 seconds. The epicenter of the quake was traced back to a mountainous area near Stanley, Idaho.

Several other cities registered the earthquake, including Coeur d’Alene, Twin Falls, and Hailey in Idaho; Spokane in Washington state; and Missoula and Bozeman in Montana. While the earthquake was powerful, no damage had been reported to local authorities.

Stephany Galbreaith of Meridian Police told the Idaho Statesman, “We haven’t sent any first responders out — police or fire.” Hayley Williams of the Boise Police Department offered a similar report, saying, “We don’t have any reports of damage just yet.”

Seismologist Lucy Jones said that at least one 4.8 magnitude aftershock had been registered and that residents should expect a few more to roll through the area.
