Triggered: A couple of frat bros wore sombreros. Baylor wents nuts

A fraternity at Baylor University was suspended after throwing a Mexican-themed party, where students wore sombreros and other Mexican-themed outfits.

The campus Kappa Sigma chapter was denounced as ‘racist’ following photos of students leaving the party Saturday night in Mexican attire. Some students allegedly showed up to the party in construction worker outfits. Students were also accused of painting their faces brown, but a Baylor University investigation found no evidence of that occurring.

The Saturday night party resulted in a protest by approximately 200 students Monday afternoon in the center of campus. The students held signs reading messages such as, “My culture is not your costume,” and “Ignorance is not an excuse for racism,” and chanted messages such as “Dear Baylor, love thy neighbor.”

Social media buzzed with similar messages.

At the protest, the students shared stories of racism at Baylor and presented a list of eight demands in response to the party. The demands, or “asks,” included an apology from the university and fraternity, mandatory diversity training, and the creation of a “multi-cultural cabinet” in Baylor’s student government.

“I’m just tired. I don’t want to do this anymore,” said Natasha Nkhama, a student who was at the protest. “I don’t want us to have to keep walking every time something like this happens. And as tired as you are of hearing about racism, we’re tired of experiencing it.”

Kappa Sigma’s national chapter suspended the fraternity for the duration of the school’s investigation.
