Failed liberal policies in California can be traced back to Donald Trump, Texas Sen. Ted. Cruz said Saturday, pointing to the billionaire businessman’s past contributions to the state’s top Democrats.
Cruz said by supporting the likes of Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown, Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Kamala Harris, Trump has betrayed Republicans in the Golden State.
“Donald Trump has consistently financed the campaigns of some of the most liberal politicians in the country,” Cruz said in a statement. “California is perhaps one of the more egregious examples. From supporting high taxes and heavy regulation to amnesty and sanctuary cities, the top three officials in California have been a disaster for the state. A number of qualified Republican candidates ran to fix California’s problems, but Trump decided to back liberal Democrats against them.”
Cruz pointed out that while Trump has not donated to the California GOP since 2005, he has donated thousands of dollars to Brown, Newsom and Harris, the “Queen of Sanctuary Cities,” between 2004 and 2013.
“This is an insult to every Republican candidate, activist, official and volunteer who spent countless hours knocking doors, filling envelopes, making calls, and raising money to prevent these far-left liberal extremists from taking office,” Cruz said. “It is a betrayal to all that Republicans across California have worked for.”
A total of 172 pledged delegates are up for grabs in California’s winner-take-all Republican primary on June 7. Trump leads Cruz by a significant margin in a RealClearPolitics average of polls: 45.7 percent to 28.3 percent.
