Gingrich thinks Santorum drop-out helps him

Newt Gingrich took shots at Mitt Romney and called for Rick Santorum’s supporters to join him now the former senator has suspended his presidential bid.

“There’s no question that Romney’s the frontrunner, but he has not locked this up,” Gingrich said during a phone call on Sean Hannity’s radio show. “People forget that Reagan had lost every primary until he got to North Carolina,” Gingrich also said. The North Carolina is scheduled for May 8th.

Gingrich did concede that he still has financial problems. “We spent more than we should have [in Florida] because we don’t have Romney’s ability to go back to Wall Street and get an extra couple million,” he said, taking on a sharper tone than when he indicated Sunday that he and Romney were “at peace.”

The former House Speaker called on Santorum’s backers to join him. “I humbly ask Senator Santorum’s supporters to visit Newt.org to review my conservative record and join us as we bring these values to Tampa,” he said in a statement released after Santorum dropped out.
