Ted Lieu offers early endorsement for Kamala Harris in 2020

Rep. Ted Lieu on Monday endorsed Sen. Kamala Harris for president, becoming the second Democrat in Congress to lend their name to a 2020 candidate for president.

“I endorse @KamalaHarris for President,” Lieu tweeted Monday morning. Both he and Harris are Democrats from California.

“Known Kamala for many years & worked together on various issues,” Lieu said. “She embraces the future, not the past, and is the person we need to move America forward.”

The California congressman told his followers to tune in to Harris’ town hall in Iowa Monday night on CNN, which is slated for 10 p.m.

The endorsement is one of only a few from a sitting member of Congress for a candidate at this early stage. The only other lawmaker to endorse so far has been Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, who is backing his brother, former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro.

Lieu, who sits on the House Judiciary and Foreign Affairs committees, is also one of the more popular members on Twitter, boasting over 926,000 followers.

Harris made her campaign kick-off speech on Sunday in Oakland, her hometown, to a crowd of 20,000, which dwarfed the crowd that appeared to see then-Sen. Barack Obama’s kickoff address in Springfield, Ill. during the 2008 campaign.
