President Obama took the stage to DJ Khaled’s “All I Do is Win” at Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, kicking off the comedy with a little victory lap: “Rush Limbaugh warned you about this … second term, baby,” he said.
Conan O’Brien, speaking after the president, compared the media to high school cliques, mentioning Fox News, MSNBC, NPR (“kids with peanut allergies”: a big laugh line), Al Jazeera, and then bloggers as goths and print media as the dead sophomore who gets a yearbook dedication.
But nearby Jack Rose Saloon was where the cool kids were creating a new category. BuzzFeed, the outlet shut out of the dinner, hosted a successful alternative party that packed two stories, boasted lines down the street (shown during C-SPAN’s coverage of the main event) and impromptu dancing.
Even Obama gave them a shout-out: “I remember when BuzzFeed was just something I did at college around 2 a.m.”
