Guard play goes from lackluster to inspired in win over Colorado

A lineup change, going small with 6-6 guard Mychal Parker replacing 6-8 forward James Padgett, was just the ticket for Maryland in a 78-71 victory over Colorado in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

The night before in a 62-42 loss to Alabama, Maryland guards Terrell Stoglin, Sean Mosley, and Nick Faust couldn’t have been worse. They were two of 23 from the field, combining for 12 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.

Friday against Colorado, the trio hit 20 0f 37 shots, including 11 of 19 from 3-point range, combining for 63 points, 16 rebounds, and six assists. Going with four guards and opening the court was the difference for Maryland.

A day after going 0-for-9 from the floor, Stoglin scored 32 points and set a single-game tournament record with 12 field goals.

The Terrapins trailed by 11 points with 16 minutes left. But a three-pointer by Faust and two by Mosley in a span of 37 seconds got Maryland close. Later, Faust hit a three-pointer and Stoglin followed with back-to-back threes as the Terps took the lead for good.

It was an unexpected three-point splurge for Maryland (2-1), which entered the game two for 21 from 3-point range.

A great rally for Maryland, with nice halftime adjustments from Turgeon, who suddenly looks like a genius, even in a bowling shirt.
