PA Voter ID law goes on trial today

ALLENTOWN MORNING CALL – HARRISBURG – The future begins today for the right to vote in Pennsylvania elections.

A trial is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Commonwealth Court to determine the legality of a 16-month-old state law that requires adults to show government-regulated photo identification at their polling place on election day. Those without a valid photo ID would be allowed to vote on provisional paper ballots and have six days to convince county election officials that their votes should be counted.

A large crowd is expected to turn out for the proceedings. The court system has set up overflow rooms to allow viewers and media to watch the proceedings if the main courtroom fills up.

The law has wound its way through the court system since a lawsuit was filed shortly after the Republican-controlled Legislature and Republican Gov. Tom Corbett signed it into law in March 2012.
