A less-than-stellar economy hasn’t kept Washingtonians from their theatre. Today, the Shakespear Theatre Company announced that the company finished the 2009-10 season with an operating surplus of $400,000.
“In one of the toughest economies, we were still able to end our season with a surplus,” managing director Chris Jennings said in a press release. “At a time when many arts organizations are struggling, the Shakespeare Theatre Company was able to break that trend.”
Big winners? The success of both “Henry V” and “Richard II” and the world premiere of David Ives’ adapation of “The Liar.”
And, things keep looking up — the company has broken sales records with its current production of “Candide.” According to the release, advance ticket sales for this show are tracking 35 percent ahead of its previously highest-grossing production, “King Lear.”
There’s still time to catch “Candide,” but act fast — it’s selling out quickly. Visit shakespearetheatre.org or call 202-547-1122 for tickets and info.
