Ronna McDaniel: ‘Uncle Mitt doesn’t want to put me in a bad position’

GOP Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said Thursday there are no hard feelings between her and her uncle, Sen.-elect Mitt Romney.

McDaniel, Romney’s niece, took a swipe at the 2012 Republican presidential nominee on social media Wednesday after the soon-to-be junior senator from Utah wrote an opinion piece arguing that President Trump had “not risen to the mantle of the office.”

”I love my uncle. My tweet yesterday had nothing to do with family. I would’ve done this to any freshman incoming senator,” McDaniel told Fox News. “There’s room for disagreement, but let’s come together when we can and remember Schumer and Pelosi … are the ones that leading this country in a bad direction, or trying to.”

McDaniel, who slammed Romney’s op-ed as “disappointing and unproductive” on Twitter, said her uncle warned her the piece would be published this week while she was watching “Aquaman” with her family on New Year’s Day.

“I think my Uncle Mitt doesn’t want to put me in a bad position at all but the reality is, I acted as party chair. He’s going to act as senator,” she told the network.

Many pundits interpreted Romney’s article as an indication he intended to continue being a so-called “Never Trumper,” acting as a surrogate leader of the anti-Trump movement during his first term in the Senate. McDaniel on Thursday, however, disagreed.

“I don’t think that’s the case. He has said that he will work with the president,” she said. “I hope that they can work together. Think about how powerful these two men could be together if they’re working on issues, and what we can do for our country.”
