President Barack Obama doesn’t arrive for his much-anticipated trip to Martha’s Vineyard until Sunday, but the Democratic glitterati already are arriving to the tony island.
President Bill Clinton himself arrived Monday. The Martha’s Vineyard Times reports he took a stroll around the town of Vineyard Haven before playing a round of golf in Oak Bluffs with his Washington pal Vernon Jordan.
Yeas & Nays sources on the island said Clinton has left, but they expect him to return later in the week, fueling speculation that his daughter, Chelsea, is planning an ultrasecret wedding there later this month. But so far, the buzz around Vineyard residents in the know has matched the denials coming from the former president’s office. Dee Smith, one of the top caterers on the island, told us she hasn’t heard a thing about it.
Meanwhile, another prominent Dem, Kenneth Feinberg, spoke to a packed house in West Tisbury in a speech sponsored by the Martha’s Vineyard Times. Despite his informal title as the Obama administration’s “compensation czar,” Feinberg defiantly told the crowd, “I am not a czar. A czar implies some sort of imperial edict.”
