Conservative columnist Mona Charen said President Trump lies “promiscuously,” resulting in an assault on democracy.
Charen, who disrupted the Conservative Political Action Conference last month when she slammed Trump and conservatives for behaving like “hypocrites” when it comes to women’s issues, explained on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” on Friday that “the rub” will come when the president is found to have broken the rule of law.
“Democracy is being assaulted in the sense that the indecency of this president. The fact that he lies so promiscuously,” Charen told her fellow panelists. “All of that attacks our basic values, but the rub will really come when he does something that flouts the rule of law, and then we’ll find out, whether, for example, attempting to fire [special counsel Robert] Mueller, and then we’ll find out whether the Republicans who thus far have been covering for him will actually stand up and say ‘bridge too far.'”
Mueller is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. The president has called the inquiry a “witch hunt” but the White House has vehemently denied reports that he has considered firing Mueller.
Charen also suggested that Trump and his allies help to perpetuate a “deep state” conspiracy in “delegitimizing institutions” like the FBI and the Justice Department.
