Hillary Clinton won Mississippi big on Tuesday night, but didn’t address the mystery of the Michigan results as as she spoke in Cleveland.
“You’re going to do everything you can in the next week along with people in Illinois, Florida, North Carolina who are going to the polls. I hope you make your voice and your vote count too,” Clinton told voters as she waited for Michigan results. “This has been so far a campaign focused on the issues and I’m proud of the campaigns Sen. Sanders and I have been running.”
Clinton went on to condemn the rhetoric coming from the Republican primary candidates and encourage voters to support the Democratic Party. But what was noticeably missing from her speech was any mention of Tuesday’s primary.
The former secretary of state won Mississippi by 50 or 60 percent, as was expected, sealing her “Southern firewall” that was intended to block Sanders from winning the nomination. But in Michigan, Sanders has outperformed the public polls showing Clinton with a double digit lead.
Ohio will be important not only in the primary but also in the general election, as it is a crucial swing state. Although Clinton currently leads Sanders in the polls, the Democratic front-runner encouraged voters to mobilize for her this next week so she secures as large a win as possible.
“If you work for me in this next week, this next week of phone calling and door knocking. If you vote for me I will work my heart out for you,” Clinton promised.
