Puerto Rico governor: Hurricanes caused $94B in damage

Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello on Monday said hurricanes Irma and Maria left behind $94 billion worth of damage to the U.S. territory.

“The quantity extends to $94 billion in damages based on a series of models and of course, efforts, for the damage assessment,” Rossello said at a press conference in Washington, D.C., Monday.

Rossello thanked the White House and Congress for the second supplemental bill and having supported the island during the emergency phase, but focused on future ambitions.

“We’re not only looking to rebuild as was before, but we wanna make it much stronger, much more resilient and make Puerto Rico a model for the rest of the Caribbean and frankly the rest of the region,” Rossello said about the island’s 3.4 million residents.

He also promised transparency in the country’s recovery process.

“We’re also making a commitment, or I’m also making a commitment, that this will be the most transparent recovery effort in the history of the United States,” he said.
