Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., condemned the violent attack on protesters by Turkish officials that occurred in Washington on Tuesday, saying the U.S. should “throw their ambassador” out of the country.
“I’d throw the Turkish ambassador out,” McCain said during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
McCain was responding to an altercation involving security officials for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that occurred outside the Turkish ambassador’s residence earlier this week.
After video of the clash was revealed, McCain took to his Twitter account to condemn the Turkish guards’ actions.
“This is the United States of America. We do not do this here. There is no excuse for this kind of thuggish behavior,” the Arizona Republican said.
D.C.’s police chief, Peter Newsham, said Wednesday the clash was a “brutal attack on peaceful protesters.”
Eleven people and one police officer were inured. Two were arrested.
