With one suspect dead and another in jail, Baltimore County police are searching for a third man they say is linked to the attempted robbery of a Perry Hall grocery store that ended with the shooting of a veteran officer.
Authorities said they have an arrest warrant for Andrew Cawthorne, 32, in connection with the holdup last week of a Super Fresh in the 8900 block of Belair Road.
“I cannot say whether he was involved in it by being there or involved in the planning,” Cpl. Michael Hill said, noting that police are still investigating a possible link between last week?s incident and a string of grocery store robberies earlier this year.
“But we do know that he was involved with it in some fashion that day.”
Hill also said Officer David Garner, who was injured in the shootout on Dec. 14 at a backyard shed after the suspects fled the Super Fresh empty-handed, was released Wednesday evening from the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
“He is resting comfortably at home,” Hill said. Garner, who has been with the department for 16 years, requested privacy from the media, Hill added.
Cawthorne previously faced armed robbery, assault and attempted armed carjacking charges in a 2002 Baltimore City case, but the following year all counts were dropped, court records show.
Initial reports after the shooting suggested that a third suspect might have been involved in the Super Fresh hit, but authorities subsequently identified only two men, a pair of cousins.
Vernon Brown, 34, was caught running away from the store and is being held in the Baltimore County Detention Center on attempted murder and other charges.
Learnold Jones, 33, died hiding in the shed after he shot out of it, striking Garner, and another officer returned fire, police said.
