Pentagon force celebrates 10th anniversary

The Pentagon Force Protection Agency is celebrating its 10th anniversary this week.

The agency is holding a celebration Tuesday in the Pentagon’s center courtyard. The event, which is for the Pentagon’s approximately 23,000 employees, will have displays and exhibits about the agency’s functions and will also feature live music, spokesman Chris Layman said.

PFPA was set up as a Department of Defense agency on May 3, 2002 as a response to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and the October 2001 anthrax incidents, officials said. In addition to providing law enforcement and building security, the agency also handles other functions connected to protection of the Pentagon and related facilities, such as chemical, biological and radiological protection.

In its 10 years, the agency has grown from about 300 people to about 1,300 people, Layman said.
