House Republicans slammed Democrats on Thursday for taunting them during the vote to repeal and replace Obamacare, by singing the song “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye,” a sign Democrats believe Republicans will lose seats over the vote.
“They are not a serious party,” said Rep. John Faso, R-N.Y. “They believe in show and theater and spectacle and you saw that out there.”
Many noted that more than 20 years ago, Republicans sang the same song at Democrats as they passed a bill to raise taxes under President Clinton. Republicans quickly took over the House in the 1994 election after that bill passed.
Rep. Chris Collins, R-N.Y., wasn’t too concerned about Republicans’ 2018 prospects.
“Obviously the Democrats forgot they lost their majority because of Obamacare,” Collins said, referring to the Republican 2010 wave that ushered them into the House majority. “We will build our majority because we will fix the healthcare system.”
But Democrats are confident that they are set for a big electoral win in 2018.
“They, politically, signed a death notice for themselves,” said Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill. “I think this is a very politically hazardous vote for them. So, you know, we’re taking names.” Schakowsky was seen still singing the song as she waited for an elevator to leave the House floor.
