Man slain during Centreville home invasion

A man was shot to death outside a 9,000-square-foot mansion in Centreville after he tried to fight off two home invaders, police said.

The man was found slain shortly before 11 a.m. Monday, police said. Authorities searched the area for two suspects, but could not find them.

Police believe two thieves broke into the home on Compton Road and the victim confronted them in the garage. The victim was an “acquaintance” of the family that owns the house. He was not identified Monday afternoon.

Former NYC police chief checks in to Md. federal prison

Former New York City Police Chief Bernard Kerik surrendered himself at the federal prison in Cumberland, Md., Monday.

Kerik, who headed the city’s response to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, will work as a groundskeeper earning 12 cents an hour. In November, Kerik pleaded guilty to two counts of tax fraud and five counts of making false statements to the government while being vetted for a senior post. President George W. Bush nominated Kerik to head the Department of Homeland Security. The bid sank in a scandal involving a contractor who paid for renovations to Kerik’s home.
