Vice President Joe Biden may be a heart breaker, but at least he sends flowers to ease the pain of rejection.

According to The Hartford (Conn.) CourantTalia Maselli extended the vice president an invitation to the Newington High School prom last fall, but never expected to get a response.

“I am inviting you so far in advance because I’m sure many 17-year-olds send you prom invitations, and I had to beat them to it,” the senior said in a letter to Biden. “I could only tolerate a high school dance if I was to be escorted by the most delightful man in America.”

Maselli, who is wooed by Biden’s sense of humor, warned the vice president that if he did turn her down, she would have to ask House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) instead.

“And we can’t have that now can we,” she wrote.

Maselli’s letter went unanswered until Thursday, the eve of the dance, when a deliveryman dropped a red, white and blue wrist corsage and hand-written note from Biden off at her home.

“I am flattered, but my schedule will not permit me to be in Connecticut on Friday evening,” the note read. “But I hope you will accept this corsage and enjoy your prom as much as I did mine.”‘

Biden invited Maselli to visit him at the White House, and his office said he picked out the corsage himself.

A spokeswoman for Biden told the Hartford Courant the vice president was touched by Maselli’s letter.

While the 18-year-old did not end up going to the prom, Maselli said she wasn’t going to miss her trip to meet the vice president in Washington, D.C.

“I was never really looking forward to going to prom,” she said. “I’m looking forward to going to Washington, D.C.”

Maselli’s family and the vice president’s office are coordinating a visit for July.
