German man investigated after getting dozens of COVID-19 shots, selling fake vaccine cards

A German man is being investigated after it was discovered that he had received more than seven dozen COVID-19 vaccine shots in order to sell fake vaccine cards.

The 60-year-old unnamed man was discovered as having been vaccinated around 90 times after he showed up at a vaccination center in the town of Eilenburg for the second time, German news agency DPA reported, according to the Associated Press. The man is said to have engaged in this scheme for several months before police caught him.

After being caught at a vaccination center in Eilenburg in the state of Saxony for the second consecutive day, police confiscated multiple blank vaccination cards, according to the outlet.

Each time the man showed up at a different vaccination center, he would provide officials with a blank card, and after receiving his shot, he would remove information about the batch number and then sell them to people who refused to get vaccinated, according to the Freie Presse.

The German Red Cross has pressed charges against the man regarding his alleged plans to sell the fake vaccine cards, and police are continuing to investigate the situation, according to the outlet.

“A national vaccine register or a coronavirus vaccine register would have shed light on the case immediately,” Knut Kohler, a spokesperson for the Saxony medical association, told the outlet.

Germany has had issues in the past with people receiving forged coronavirus vaccine cards. In January, German soccer coach Markus Anfang was banned for one year and fined 20,000 euros, or $22,564, after it was discovered that he had used a falsified vaccine card.
