Gov. Martin O’Malley made an appearance at the University of Colorado campus Wednesday.

While he spoke to Red Alert Politics at a student-run debate broadcast about eliminating college debt, O’Malley also made his appearance in Boulder for another issue.

The Democratic candidate came to attend a rally with activists supporting stronger gun control legislation.

O’Malley was asked by MRCTV reporter Dan Joseph why he wasn’t doing well in the polls, and why he felt he needed more debates. His answer (or lack thereof) got a little tense, which prompted the reporter to ask “what are you here for?” O’Malley evoked the anti-gun rally at that point:

I’m here because gun safety legislation is critically needed for our country. All of these people here are, are part of a growing consensus of people, and we see this consensus coming together, in the Democratic Party, for commonsense gun safety legislation. We bury far too many Americans from gun violence.

O’Malley also expressed hope that the issue would be raised in the GOP debate and the candidates would have “the backbone to confront the NRA.”

In the background was a smattering of cheers and applause as O’Malley spoke, from people with handmade anti-Second Amendment signs. One read “the 2 amendment is not more important than our children.”
