With the Kentucky Derby victory of Maryland-bred Animal Kingdom, the Preakness takes on added intrigue May 21 in Baltimore. Who are the most memorable Maryland-bred winners of Triple Crown races?

5. Deputed Testamony (1983) » The last Maryland-bred horse to win the Preakness upset Derby winner Sunny’s Halo. In the Belmont, Deputed Testamony was outrun by Caveat, another Maryland-bred champion.

4. Bee Bee Bee (1972) » He ran only one leg of the Triple Crown but made it memorable, going off at 19-1 against overwhelming favorite Riva Ridge in the Preakness and leading all the way.

3. Dancer’s Image (1968) » Does Dancer’s Image belong on this list? He was the only Kentucky Derby winner disqualified (for use of a pain-killer). The horse then was declared the winner in court in 1970, a decision that was overturned in 1972.

2. Kauai King (1966) » The first Maryland-bred horse to win the Kentucky Derby and the only Maryland-bred to win the first two legs of the Triple Crown finished fourth in Belmont, which was won by Amberoid.

1. Native Dancer (1953) » He went 21-1 with victories in the Preakness and Belmont. His only loss came in the Derby by a head to Dark Star. Native Dancer was ranked third by the Associated Press behind Man o’ War and Secretariat on the list of the greatest racehorses of 20th century.
