“I come from what a lot of people might seem to think is a foreign country—we have a balanced budget, we have a surplus, we are creating more jobs than any other state in the union, and we are doing this with a part-time legislature,” Perry said during his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference Thursday.
“If we had a part-time Congress, would they really get less done?” he added taking a stab at the federal government.
“Washington doesn’t worry about how to pay bills,” Perry said.”They just charge it to our grandchildren’s account.”
The Texas governor admitted that people might think his position on issues such as not expanding Medicaid is “ideological,” but he says “that’s only true to the extent if being able to pay one’s bills in the years ahead is ideological.”
“In Texas, our constitution requires a balanced budget,” the governor said touting his state once again. According to Perry, Texas’ balanced budget and low tax spending is the reason why Texas is number one in the country in terms of job creation.
“We’re leading the way!” he yelled out to the crowd. “Make what Americans buy, buy what Americans make, and sell it to the world!”
Perry said “the difference in Texas goes back to the crux of the issue.” “We don’t believe in growing government to grow the economy,” he explained.
The governor also used Texas as a prime example for how the GOP can reach out to Hispanics, a demographic the Republicans lost during the 2012 presidential election.
“Let me say something about what appeals to Hispanics in states like Texas,” he began. “It is the free enterprising agenda that allow small businesses to prosper…It’s the belief in life and the faith in God.”
Perry argued that no one comes to America for “a government handout.” “The want opportunity! They want freedom!” the Texan belted out.
Perry begged the crowd to look at the state of Texas as a shining example of freedom and opportunity, not Western Europe. “We will never bend to the social and economic agenda of Western Europe,” he shouted. “Yes, it is an interesting place to vacation but it is a sorry example of governance.”
In the words of Perry, “God bless Texas!”
