WATCH: Mike Tyson says being more conservative is ‘common sense’

Mike Tyson took a jab at politics, saying he has become more conservative after being an “all-out liberal.”

The former heavyweight champion told Newsmax he gets in trouble with his friends and family when he talks politics, but that “it’s common sense.”

“My family gets mad, my friends get mad when we talk politics,” Tyson said. “When I was younger, I was all-out liberal. But as I get older and I look at my children and I see what’s out in the world, I get a little conservative. You know, it’s common sense, looking at the world at the state it’s in right now. You want safety.”

Tyson said he tries to stay away from politics and religion because he has taken “a beating” from the media in the past, noting “they stole my freedom of speech.”

“I can’t talk about no politicians,” the boxer said, backing away from a question about his thoughts on Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis. “Last time I put my hat in the arena and gave my opinion, wow, did they give me a beating.”

The boxer also discussed his health, saying that when his sciatica flares up, he “can’t even talk,” but otherwise, he’s “in good health.”

Earlier this month, Tyson was in a wheelchair at Miami International Airport after having said his “expiration date is coming close” in July. The boxer’s sciatica flare-up has been described as “an occupational hazard for an athlete like Mike.”
