Democratic Congressman Albert Wynn, whose district includes Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, has been selected to chair the House’s Environmental and Hazardous Materials Subcommittee.
Wynn, who has been a member of the subcommittee for the past two years, said he’s honored to now take charge of the influential group within the Energy and Commerce Committee. The subcommittee’s primary task will involve oversight of the Environmental Protection Agency, something the congressman said was severely lacking under the Republicans’ watch.

He told The Examiner his subcommittee will look at the agency’s finances, particularly with regard to hazardous waste issues.
“First we’ll hold an oversight hearing of the EPA’s budget — that may take us into questions of audits, but we’ll have to see,” Wynn added.
Wynn said the subcommittee will also make inquiries into the age of the equipment used to disseminate drinking water to homes, and into what he sees as a growing problem of poor hazardous waste disposal negatively impacting low-income communities.
“There’s a substantial amount of data that’s found it has a significant effect on those communities,” he said.
In the 110th Congress, Wynn has been tapped to be a member of the subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality. Wynn also was appointed to the position of senior whip by House Majority Whip James Clyburn.
