A new 50-state survey shows Hillary Clinton far ahead of Donald Trump in the projected Electoral College tally, with some surprising advantages in typically red states.
Clinton has a 1 percentage point advantage, 46-45, in both Texas and Arizona, according to a new Washington Post-SurveyMonkey poll. The poll shows each candidate with 20 states leaning their way, and 10 states — including Arizona and Texas — up for grabs.
But the Post’s projection of the Electoral College count shows Clinton with 244 Electoral College votes overall and Trump with just 126 votes. To win, a candidate needs 270 Electoral College votes. Trump’s poor showing in the projection is likely attributable to his inability to hold onto reliable Republican voters in states such as Texas, Arizona and Georgia, which is one of two states where the two major party candidates are tied.
The Washington Post-SurveyMonkey poll measured 74,886 registered voters, the “largest sample ever undertaken” by the Post, online from Aug. 9 to Sept. 1.
