Jim Williams: Nationals TV duo ready for expanded audience

Labor Day Weekend is always a great time for sports on TV and for me it was about sitting in my Northwest Washington home watching MASN’s Bob Carpenter and Tom Paciorek on Comcast channel 42. It was a real treat.

We all know how long it took to get the team on cable and yes, the Nats are in last place. But watching Bob and Tommy is always a joy.

Together less than a full season, they have become one of baseball’s best broadcast teams. They have also become hometown guys cheering for the Nats while unafraid to point out the team’s mistakes when needed.

I spoke to Carpenter about what it means to be on throughout the Washington/Baltimore area starting this week.

“Tommy and I go out each day and do our best to give the fans a top notch broadcast,” Carpenter said. “That said, we are so excited that such a large number of fans through our launch on Comcast will be able to see the last month of this season. We really have a chance to play the spoilers in the N.L. wild card race.”

On what it is like to be a part of the Nats’ broadcast team:

“I have a World Series ring that I got with the Cardinals but I have to say that for both Tommy and me this really feels like home. The Nationals fans, the team and the new ownership all have been wonderful and made us feel like part of the community. Washington is going to be a great baseball town and with Mets, Phillies and O’s all so close we will develop some great rivalries that I hope we will be able to broadcast to the fans for many years to come.”

Now we can add the names Bob Carpenter and TomPaciorek alongside the radio pairing of Charlie Slowes and Dave Jageler to the Nats’ contribution to D.C.’s long list of great broadcasters. The Redskins, Wizards, Caps and United all have nationally acclaimed TV and radio crews.

Let’s hope that MASN and the Nationals keeps this group around for a long time.

Comcast channels more sports

Starting Tuesday, Comcast brings CN8 to the Washington area. Depending your location it will show up on either channel 21 or 18.

SportsTalk 980’s Brian Mitchell will be part of “Out of Bounds,” the channel’s signature sports program. The show looks at sports in Boston, New York, Philadelphia and now the Washington/Baltimore area from 7-11 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Jim Williams is a seven-time Emmy Award-winning TV producer, director and writer.
