Joni Ernst to focus on bipartisanship in State of the Union response

Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, like President Obama, plans to focus a chunk of her State of Union speech on what both sides of the aisle can accomplish.

Ernst, according to excerpts obtained by the Washington Examiner, will discuss trade agreement and the old Republican favorite — taxes.

“Let’s tear down trade barriers in places like Europe and the Pacific,” Ernst will say. “Let’s sell more of what we make and grow in America over there so we can boost manufacturing, wages, and jobs right here, at home.”

She will add that the tax code needs to be updated and loopholes removed. “Republicans think tax filing should be easier for you, not just the well-connected.”

But of course, no Republican response could be complete without a dig at Obamacare.

“We see the hurt caused by canceled healthcare plans and higher monthly insurance bills,” Ernst will say, adding that when Americans asked for solutions to their problems, Washington (read: Obama and Democrats) responded with “failed policies like Obamacare.”

Ernst will promise that now that Republicans control the House and the Senate, “Congress is back to work on your behalf.” Of course, that will require the party to focus on jobs and economy instead of wedge issues, but I guess we’ll have to see if they hold up to their State of the Union resolutions.
