Labor Secretary Tom Perez, a potential running mate for Hillary Clinton this fall, acknowledged that the presumptive Democratic nominee needs to “earn the trust” of voters following the email server scandal.
“She acknowledged that it was a mistake to to do this and she acknowledges that she has to earn the trust back of many people who are wondering,” Perez told Shannon Bream during a “Fox News Sunday” interview.
Perez celebrated FBI director James Comey’s decision not to recommend charges against Clinton and touted even the “partisan” House hearing that saw Comey testify at greater length about the case. “That hearing was rather interesting this week because what it really illustrated is what we know, which is that there was no criminal wrongdoing,” Perez said.
Another potential vice presidential candidate — Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, who is being considered by Donald Trump — suggested that Clinton qualified for misdemeanor charges that don’t require prosecutors to establish criminal intent.
“Really, the problem is Hillary Clinton,” Sessions said. “She’s the one that pushed this for her own convenience, and as the director said, this information could very well be in the hands of our adversaries right now because that system was not secured and was easily penetrable, and we have evidence that some of the systems were penetrated.”
