White House spokesman: Republicans only have themselves to blame for Trump

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Republicans have only themselves to blame for being in the situation of either having to back a controversial nominee or abandon Donald Trump with Election Day less than a month away.

“For more than seven years, Republicans in Washington have prioritized opposition to President Obama above all else,” which led Trump to the GOP presidential nomination, Earnest told reporters traveling with President Obama to North Carolina Tuesday.

“What my mom would say in this situation is: ‘You reap what you sow.'”

Almost every Republican leader condemned Trump after a 2005 video of him making crass remarks about a woman and using vulgar language to discuss her surfaced.

Earnest said Obama finds the video “repugnant.”

Having to fish or cut bait on such a volatile nominee isn’t “something from which they’ll quickly recover,” Earnest said about the GOP.

Both Obama and Earnest have charged before that Republican vitriol at Obama and refusal to cooperate with Democrats, leading to a Congress that cannot pass much legislation, created an atmosphere that allowed Trump to rise.
