Moldovan prime minister ‘very worried’ about possible Russian invasion

Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita is “very worried” about the possibility Russia could invade its borders should their actions in Ukraine move closer.

Gavrilita said the possibility of such a move “is a hypothetical scenario for now” during a Sunday interview on CNN but added, “But if the military actions move further into the southwestern part of Ukraine and toward Odesa, then, of course, we are very worried.”

Moldova, which shares a border with Ukraine along the southwest, gained its independence following the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, though it hasn’t been able to get out from under Russia’s sphere of influence.

Gavrilita, who has only been in office for just under a year, said her concerns are applicable to any smaller country near a larger power with a willingness to circumvent the international rules-based order.

“This is a very difficult position not just for Moldova but for any small country, any country that relies on the rules-based international order,” she said. “If a country can start an annexation war without any regard for international law, then in this sense, nobody is safe, and I think that a lot of countries are worried.”

The European Council approved adding Ukraine and Moldova to the European Union last month. Its parliament also advocated for EU leaders to pursue the same for Georgia “once its government has delivered” particular promises required for admission.
