Changes to Washington’s Nationwide Tour event

Neediest Kids Championship will be played Oct. 4-7 at Avenel

Washington has a new date, a new sponsor, and a new venue for its event on the Nationwide Tour. After a five-year run, the Melwood Prince George’s County Open has run its course. The new event is the Neediest Kids Championship presented by Under Armour and will be played Oct. 4-7 at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm.

Neediest Kids is a non-profit organization that helps underprivileged youth in the Washington area.

“We look forward to introducing Neediest Kids and their incredible story and sharing with everyone more information about this exciting new relationship at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm,” said tournament director Teo Sodeman, in a press release.

The Melwood Prince George’s County Open was played at Woodmore Country Club in Mitchellville for three years. The last two were played in the first week of June at the University of Maryland Golf Course.

Steve Wheatcroft was last year’s winner by a record-breaking 12-stroke margin. Other winners were Paul Claxton (2007), Jeff Klauk (2008), Mathias Gronberg (2009), and Tommy Gainey (2010).

The TPC Potomac at Avenel formerly hosted Washington’s PGA Tour stop from 1987-2004 and in 2006. The Booz Allen Classic was discontinued, but later replaced by the AT&T National, hosted by Tiger Woods.

Avenel was renovated in 2007-08 at a cost of $32 million. Avenel hosted the Constellation Senior Players Championship in 2010.
