Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms is the latest high-profile politician to announce a positive test for the coronavirus.
Bottoms tweeted on Monday that she was informed of her positive test but is currently feeling no symptoms of the disease.
“COVID-19 has literally hit home,” she wrote. “I have had NO symptoms and have tested positive.”

The state of Georgia had reported a total of 97,064 coronavirus cases and 2,878 deaths as of 3 p.m. on Monday. Bottoms joins United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul as one of the most well-known politicians to contract the virus since the global outbreak began in January.
The mayor has encouraged citizens in Atlanta to shelter in place and has strongly recommended wearing of face masks, although doing so is not mandated by law.
Bottoms, who is on the list of possible running mates for presumptive 2020 Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, has weathered weeks of violence and unrest in her city following the fatal shooting of Rayshard Brooks by police at a Wendy’s on June 12.
