Kasich makes it official, drops presidential bid

Ohio Gov. John Kasich made it official Wednesday evening by announcing the end of his presidential campaign during a press conference in Columbus, Ohio.

The announcement came after the Ohio governor cancelled a planned press conference at Washington Dulles International Airport earlier Wednesday, where he was set to discuss the next step of his campaign after Donald Trump took home the Indiana primary.

“I have always said that the lord has a purpose for me, as he has for everyone,” Kasich told a room of supporters in Columbus. “And as I suspend my campaign today, I have renewed faith, deeper faith, that the lord will show me the way forward and fulfill the purpose of my life.”

His campaign’s suspension came less than 24 hours after Sen. Ted Cruz dropped his presidential bid after the loss, which set Trump on a path to the requisite 1,237-delegate mark to take home the GOP nomination. Soon after, Republican National Commitee Chairman Reince Priebus declared that Trump was now the party’s “presumptive” nominee.

The announcement also comes a day after the Kasich team vowed to stay in the race, with chief strategist John Weaver writing that Tuesday’s results are “not going to alter Gov. Kasich’s campaign plans.”

Kasich only won one primary or caucus during the Republican race, carrying his home state of Ohio on March 15.
