United remains on cruise control as team sets franchise road win mark

With an ever-increasing lead in Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference and growing assault on the record books, D.C. United appears to be on cruise control.

With Saturday’s 1-0 win in Columbus, D.C. (12-1-5) matched a franchise-best record of seven games unbeaten on the road and equaled the fourth best unbeaten streak in league history with a 12-game run overall. But United’s last six victories have all been by a slim one-goal margin, including five 1-0 wins.

“We’ve learned a lot from a couple of the earlier games where we had a 1-0 lead, and they came back and tied it,” said goalkeeper Troy Perkins on Friday, who notched his league-leading seventh shutout at Columbus. “We’ve matured a lot over the last month, we’ve struggled to string five or six passes together, we’re losing possession a lot.”

A little more offense would make United a lot more comfortable, and they were on their way before Alecko Eskandarian’s ejection in the 65th minute on Saturday. After just six shots against F.C. Dallas on July 4, United had 13 shots against the Crew.
