Pop star and actress Lady Gaga has been cast as Harley Quinn in the sequel to Joker.
Harley Quinn is the love interest of the Joker character, played by Joaquin Phoenix for the second time. Lady Gaga’s casting was announced in a musical teaser Thursday. The teaser includes the silhouettes of Gaga and Phoenix, with the song “Cheek to Cheek,” set in the background, a song the singer is known to have performed alongside Tony Bennett.
The sequel is titled Folie à Deux, which is a French translation of “madness for two,” and will include the origin story of the romantic relationship between the Joker and Harley Quinn. Recent film adaptations of the characters from the DC comic include 2016’s Suicide Squad, 2020’s Birds of Prey, and 2021’s The Suicide Squad, in which actress Margot Robbie played Harley Quinn.
