A Reed cakewalk in Rhode Island

Democratic Rhode Island Sen. Jack Reed was easily elected to a fourth term in the Ocean State on Tuesday, a contest that was never in doubt in the liberal bastion.

Reed’s victory over state GOP chairman Mark Zaccaria was announced by NBC soon after the polls closed at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

In earlier years of President Obama’s tenure, Reed was mentioned as a possible pick for secretary of defense or director of the Central Intelligence Agency. The New England Democrat, a major Obama ally on foreign policy, said he had no interest in those positions.

The White House has brushed aside talk of a shake-up to the president’s senior team following the midterms.
