Trump says Bob Corker privately asked him whether to run for re-election

President Trump said Tennessee voters are “not happy” with Republican Sen. Bob Corker, and that Corker has privately asked him whether he should run again. Trump tweeted the criticism Friday after Corker criticized the president and questioned his competence.

“Strange statement by Bob Corker considering that he is constantly asking me whether or not he should run again in ’18. Tennessee not happy!” Trump tweeted Friday.

After an event in Chattanooga last week, Corker issued a scathing critique of the president, calling into question his competence and saying Trump hasn’t demonstrated that he understands the “character of this nation,” a reference to Trump’s comments on Charlottesville.

“I do think there need to be some radical changes. The president has not yet been able to demonstrate the stability nor some of the competence that he needs to demonstrate in order to be successful. And we need for him to be successful,” Corker told
reporters. “Our nation needs for him to be successful. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a Republican or Democrat. We need for our president — the world needs for our president — to be successful.”

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders dismissed Corker’s comments on Thursday.

“I think that’s a ridiculous and outrageous claim and doesn’t dignify a response from this podium,” Sanders told reporters.
