A Minnesota man pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court on Tuesday to wire fraud after making fraudulent insurance claims for his camper, which he set on fire.
U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger announced that Denis Molla, 30, filed false insurance claims regarding his camper. He attempted to convince law enforcement that his garage door was vandalized with “Biden 2020,” “BLM,” and an antifa symbol spray-painted on it. Molla told law enforcement on Sept. 23, 2020, that his camper had a Trump flag on it before it was set ablaze. He attempted to pin the damage on three men he saw outside his camper who he said targeted him because of their political differences.

“Molla submitted multiple insurance claims seeking coverage for the damage to his garage, camper, vehicles, and residence caused by the fire,” a press release read. “In total, Molla submitted more than $300,000 in fraudulent insurance claims, and he received approximately $61,000 from his insurance company. Molla also received more than $17,000 from individual donors via GoFundMe.”
Eventually, the FBI and the Brooklyn Center Police Department conducted an investigation that found Molla had committed the arson himself.
