Biden urges North Carolina, one of the least vaccinated states, to ‘get it done’

President Joe Biden implored a crowded gym in Raleigh, North Carolina, to get vaccinated and stop the spread of the coronavirus delta variant.

Biden opened the Thursday event with a familiar line, noting the United States saw more lives lost over the past year than in World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War, and every modern U.S. military engagement combined.

As of Thursday, roughly 55% of North Carolina adults have been partially vaccinated, ranking the state in the bottom quarter of the nation. The president urged more to get their shots, saying the “rest of the world is looking” at the U.S. as an example to battle the pandemic.

Biden added toward the tail end of his speech one of the reasons he ran for president was to “unify the country.”

“It’s never been as divided today as it is today, since the Civil War. Folks, it’s such a waste of talent. Such a waste of time,” the president said. “The rest of the world is wondering whether or not we can really lead the world again.”

Rolling out an equitable vaccination program is a “gigantic, logistical challenge,” according to Biden. Still, the commander-in-chief noted, “The data couldn’t be clearer: If you’re vaccinated, you’re safe. You’re still at risk of getting seriously ill or dying if you aren’t.”

He urged attendees, “especially young people,” to get their vaccinations to stop the spread of the delta variant.

“It works. It’s free. It’s safe. It’s easy. It’s convenient,” he continued. “Get it done.”

“Please get vaccinated,” the president implored the crowd in closing. “Let’s everyone do our part.”
