Wisconsin’s Walker rejects VP, suggests Ryan

A day before the recall vote that Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is expected to survive, the Republican is brushing off talk he’s on Mitt Romney’s list of vice presidential picks.

The embattled governor, appearing on Fox Business Network’s “Cavuto,” told host Neil Cavuto: “I am not going through a year and a half of this to then take off. I have to fulfill my commitment to the voters of the state of Wisconsin.” The interview airs tonight at 8 p.m.

Walker is facing a recall election because he pushed to get public unions to pay more for their costly state benefits, leading to charges he is anti-union. Initially, his polls were bad, but as the impact of his decisions have settled in and helped the state, he is now above 50 percent in some approval polls.

The comeback has led some pundits to suggest he’d make a good vice presidential pick or even a presidential candidate in 2016. Focused on his own race this week, he suggested that House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, also from Wisconsin, would be a good pick. “On the VP side, if Mitt Romney were to ask me who would be a good pick from Wisconsin I would say my friend Paul Ryan would be at the top of the list. He would do an exceptional job,” Walker told Fox.

Cavuto also quizzed Walker on President Obama’s surprising decision not to campaign against him in Wisconsin, the governor said, “For all the hype, it’s kind of confusing for all the voters here. It’s a sign there is a real concern. What I have seen is voters who tell me they voted for my opponent or they are Democrats, but in each case they are telling me they are voting for me.”
