Teenager fatally shot outside Pittsburgh school

A teenager was fatally shot outside a Pittsburgh school Wednesday, according to police.

The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police said they responded to the call at 1:45 p.m. and found a 15-year-old male with at least one gunshot wound to the chest inside a school transport van in front of the Oliver Citywide Academy, according to a statement.

Police confirmed in a tweet before 5:30 p.m. that the victim had died at the hospital.

“It’s obviously a concern for us at any location, but … at a school, that’s something we don’t want. We are going to do everything we can to find out who did it and bring them to justice,” Police Chief Scott Schubert said during a news conference.

The teenager was shot from outside the van, which had one other individual in it at the time of the shooting, though no one else was injured, according to police.

The Oliver Citywide Academy is a special education center for grades 3-12, according to the Pittsburgh Public Schools website.

At 2:13 p.m., Pittsburgh Public Safety posted on Twitter that the school was on lockdown as police responded to the shooting. An hour later, it posted that the school had reopened and police were clearing the scene.

Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey responded to the shooting on Twitter, writing, “Oliver Citywide Academy is in my prayers.”
