Today’s Sugar-coated Outrage

Who: The Corn Refiners Association

What: They’re running ads for high-fructose corn syrup in which a mother doles out mysterious red punch. When another mother objects to the punch, the first says: “What? That it’s made from corn, doesn’t have artificial ingredients and like sugar it’s fine in moderation?”

Why it’s a bad idea: Did anyone miss the fact that we Americans are facing an obesity epidemic? Or the fact that we need to give our ever-widening children LESS corn syrup and sugar?

Why they’re doing it: Apparently they think high fructose corn syrup has gotten an unfairly bad rap. Hang on here… are we missing something? High fructose corn syrup sure isn’t doing you any favors in the health department. The Corn Refiners Association has every right to run this commercial, but that doesn’t mean we have to like it.

Today’s Bright Bulb

Going to the dogs. OK, maybe a doggie oxygen mask seems a little excessive, but it just saved a life in Anne Arundel County. Pets are members of the family too, and oxygen masks save them from owners who don’t properly harness them into seats as well as from smoke inhalation if your house catches fire. They’re also good for search and rescue dogs. The best part? They were donated by a national nonprofit in Crownsville.

“He knew he was going overseas and that didn’t stop him. He said joining the Marines was his choice and he wanted to change the world.” — Janice Chance, speaking of her son’s Marine Corps service and subsequent death. Her son, Capt.
